Highlands Playhouse, one of the country’s oldest professional summer stock theaters, is the legacy of Highlands’s early forward-thinking families. The first troupe, all amateurs, began using the Highlands School auditorium in the mid-1930s. “Even to this day,” writes historian Randolph Shaffner, “the acoustics are nearly perfect.” They formally organized in the late 1930s as the Highlands Little Theatre, which was ultimately renamed Highlands Playhouse. The first big production was the Broadway comedy “Dulcy.” Reserved seats cost 50¢. After 90 years the Playhouse is stronger than ever., movies and Summer Stock rock the halls with drama, comedy and and song and dance for all.

Happy New Year! The Playhouse may appear quiet but behind the curtain we are busy working toward a musical 2021 summer! We are hard at work raising funds and planning a spectacular season. Virus and the Governor permitting, we will reopen in late Spring with first run movies, private events and live performances. Until then, please stay well and remember it is only through your generous donations that the 'show can go on'!
